Nearly 4,800 Active COVID-19 Cases in Public Schools

Arkansas public schools reported a total of 4,791 active COVID-19 cases on Thursday, a 23% increase from a survey on Monday, according to state health data. 

Magazine School District, southeast of Fort Smith, had 32 active cases for a rate of 62 active cases per 1,000 students, the largest in the state. Cabot School District led the state with 173 active cases overall, but its rate was 17 cases per 1,000. Fort Smith School District had 150 active cases, or 11 cases per 1,000 students.

Among colleges, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff reported 44 active cases for a rate of 18 active cases per 1,000 students, the highest among colleges.  The University of Arkansas at Fayetteville reported 220 active cases, but due to its large student population, the rate was 8 active cases per 1,000 students.

From Aug. 30 to Sept. 2, public schools districts reported 4,791 active cases, up from 3,911 on August 30, the last report released. Colleges reported 666 active cases, up 43% from the Monday report while private schools had 100 active cases, up 19%.
